Activities
Introduction
The activities in this file have been compiled in groups according to movement, sensory, social or cognitive goal areas. However many of these activities encompass more than one goal area so the reader need not be limited to using them as specified here. For example, 'In and out the circle' involves movement but can also be a good activity for socialisation. The balloon and lycra activity provides a lot of sensory stimulation but also encourages an increased amount of movement. Many of the cognitive activities also serve as an agent for movement or socialisation and so forth. There are of course many other goal areas as well, not just the four mentioned.
Variations to some activities have been suggested but it has been assumed that the therapist/teacher utilising materials from this file will know their own clients, as well as any adaptations that need to be made for them. For this reason, comments such as "assist client(s) if necessary" or "work hand-over-hand" have been omitted for the sake of repetition.
The activities and ideas in this activity file have been accumulated over the years from work experiences, music therapy books and other resources, professional development opportunities, and discussion with music therapy colleagues. My thanks to all who assisted in this project
This is by no means a stand-in for music therapy improvisation. Rather it is a guide when working with the same population for a number of years which sometimes creates a prevailing need and desire to change things or to do something new.
Students, parents, professionals, feel free to send your queries to Kathryn.
