About Kathryn Stevenson
Kathryn has worked in a wide variety of special education settings since 1981, in NZ, Australia, and the U.S.A. Her work has included children with multiple disabilities, autism, developmental delay, downs syndrome, and vision impairment. Kathryn has also worked with adults who have a range of intellectual and physical disabilities. Prior to training as a music therapist, Kathryn spent seven years working in a rest-home/hospital for the elderly in which she guided the residents with activities, music and craftwork ideas. Currently, Kathryn works part time for Homai NSB Early Childhood Centre, in addition to her private practice.
Kathryn is one 27 NZ registered music therapists. She is also one of the first New Zealanders to hold a Masters qualification in music therapy which she gained at Montclair State University, New Jersey, U.S.A., having already completed her BA there. While completing her MA in NJ, Kathryn worked as a music therapist at a special Education Preschool in New York. She worked there for 5 years, during which time she also set up an American Music Therapy Association approved internship program.
The internship program involved training students in the practical component of their training and helping them to put the "theory" of music therapy into practice as a therapist. Kathryn has since given several conference presentations and workshops related to music therapy for teachers, specialists, parents, and students in NZ, and overseas.
Kathryn has been involved with the New Zealand Society for Music Therapy (NZSMT) since 1981. She has been an active member of the local Auckland committee as Secretary, newsletter editor and President. Currently, Kathryn is a member of the ETPP (a National Committee), and Editor of Connections (an e-newsletter for NZ music therapists).
